That's because those elements reside on the desktop folder *ON* the 12 GB
hard drive. Take those items from the desktop and copy them onto a folder on
your 40 GB. You could create a folder on the desktop and copy them there, if
you booted from the 40 GB. Then, they'll reside on your 40 GB drive and
you'll be able to put them on the desktop (after you remove the originals
from the 12 GB, obviously).
