I found a posting at MacFixit.com that give some options to this
situation ... goes as follows

AppleTalk connection dropped in Mac OS X: some tips

Brian Povlsen writes: "We have had a problem keeping a steady connection
to any AppleTalk services on our Ethernet 10/100 switched network,
running Mac OS X. Specifically what happens is that when 'Interference
Robustness' is active in the AirPort Base Station, PowerBook G4s have
difficulty keeping an AppleTalk signal. The AppleTalk seems to not be
active even though it is checked in the Network System Preferences.
Turning off 'Interference Robustness' allows AppleTalk over AirPort to
work normally."

We have not had this specific symptom, but we have had cases where the
AppleTalk signal is dropped unexpectedly. For example, we recently had a
failure when trying to print to an AppleTalk-connected printer. The
error message said that AppleTalk was not active. However, when we
checked in Network System Preferences, it was active. Eventually, we had
to delete the printer in Print Center and start over before we could
print over AppleTalk again.

At least for the printing error, the problem occurs most often in
multiple port setups. In particular, if you have AppleTalk enabled for
both AirPort and Ethernet, you may get this symptom. A solution is to
disable AppleTalk in one of the ports. Sometimes, just switching the
port order in Active Network Ports may help.

I have done what was suggested ... leave only one port open and place
that connection at the top of the list (seems to work at least most of
the time - making sure Appletalk is selected). I've also set up
different locations with the configurations I want: 1) for printing
over ethernet at home 2) for being on the wireless Aerolan network at
home (but it won't print wirelessly, only good for surfing, email).

Under that 2nd configuration, I still can't print wirelessly over OS
X ... haven't figured this out yet ... won't recognize the printer when
trying to search for it. Would still love to hear if anybody has
figured this one out ... Kyle you said you had this configuration
working ... any clues?

Hoping Jaguar will resolve some of these issues ... maybe a future
driver from Asante may do the trick as well.

Configuration:

Titanium - G4 running OS 10.1.5
Asante Aerolan PCMCIA card
Asante FriendlyNET Wireless Cable/DSL Router FR3202AL-1PCM
Asante FriendlyNET 8+2 Ethernet Switch
AsanteTalk Ethernet to Localtalk Bridge
