While helping a friend install some software on her 1st-generation
400MHz G4 PowerBook, I ran into a problem: the CD drive made a
terrible noise while accessing the installer CD, then about halfway
through the installation the CD spun down to a stop, and after that
the drive kept making noises like it was trying to spin the CD but
couldn't. When I tried to eject the CD, it didn't come out. I finally
got it out using the paper-clip method. A second try had the same
result. I suspect all this was because the installer CD had a paper
label on it, making it thicker than a factory-pressed CD, resulting
in friction that was too great for the drive's motor. I remember
reading about such problems with the DVD/CD drives in the original
TiBooks; does anyone know if there is any kind of extended warranty
from Apple for this? This TiBook, of course, is well beyond its
standard one-year warranty.
