As just stated normal use is the autologin (one account). You don't see a login dialog box; the Mac just boots into the Finder. Because it is a flavor of UNIX, Mac OS X still has all sorts of stuff you shouldn't touch. "Someone" has to be able to, however for the OS to run, and that's root (or system). Does that affect you in normal use? No. Will you bump into the occasional requirement to give your password? Yes. There is the parallel to Windows, which also has all sorts of unhidden files you shouldn't touch. The Mac at least balks before allowing you to deep-six the OS. You can "bypass" the first and the last if the computer is used only with one account.
