Hi folks, I'm considering upgrading the drive in my Pismo. At the 40GB size, there are two IBM models that are attractive, both having the quiet/fluid bearings. The main differences seem to be that the cheaper model runs at 4200 RPM, with 2 MB cache. The pricier version runs at 5400 RPM, with 8 MB cache. I'm inclined toward the faster model, for performance reasons, however something in the back of my mind tells me that I may take a hit on battery life, since supporting more memory and a faster rotation surely takes more energy.
Anyone here care to comment on the relative merits of going a little faster at the expense of battery life? Anyone got some estimates of HOW MUCH faster my 500 MHz Pismo will feel, and HOW MUCH less battery life I could expect? The $60 price difference is not insignificant, either.
