Hey guys, anyone with a reduced battery and doesn't know about resetting it
might want to read this.

Well, i was faced with a 7-12 minute battery for my 333 bronze and two 70
minute lectures to take notes... and the decision of buying a new M7318 for
127$. So as a last ditch attempt to save my poor battery (which was stored
nearly empty for nearly two years before I bought the whole thing from
someone), I looked up how to reset the power manager and how to recondition
my battery. I know many of you out there know this already, in fact, thats
how i knew what to look for. For those people who are new to the powerbook
arena, such as myself, this is what I found.

Apple Tech document 14449 contains specific information on resetting the
power manger for every powerbook made. (100- Ti G4 DVI) For a bronze, there
is a button between the s-vid out and modem. With the power adapter connected
(I had the battery loaded also,) press the button. the power light blinks
once. Wait no less than five seconds, then turn it on. DONT turn it on before
5 seconds! the reset will fail. (And if it does, just turn it off, press the
button again and exercise more patience... geeze.. (= )

Download a software component called Battery Reset 2.0. Go to
support>downloads, then the complete list of current downloads (link at the
bottom-ish), click you nationality (i click english north american) >
macintosh> powerbooks> PB_g3 series> batteryreset.smi.bin.
Connect the AC adapter and load the battery. Then turn on the laptop and
install battery reset 2.0. It will restart and load Battery Rest
automatically. Click what side you want to reset and it will do its thing. I
think it is supposed to take awhile- mine took no more than .25 seconds to
reset- maybe that should tell me how shot my battery is ( ;
It will completely drain the battery and reset it's microprocessor (i
believe) that reports to the bronze about its current capacity.

Now the important step- LET THE BATTERY RECHARGE COMPLETELY. dont interrupt
it. dont unplug the AC. dont take out the battery. not for a second. dont
look at it funny and/or cross-eyed.

Keep in mind that mine is actually still charging. I take this as a good
thing, as it usually takes it an hour to charge to full (10 minutes of life)
and it's been charging now for about 70 minutes and the first light has only
stopped blinking. Which means it has a while to go.

I have to go to sleep, as I have an 8 am class tomorrow. So I will update
you all on if/how well this procedure works. Right now, i'm really hoping for
the best.

Thanks all!!
