This is a long post, so feel free to skip ahead. I have a Hewlit Packard 9600si CDRW drive that I've installed in a generic external enclosure. Bought it in June from a reliable seller on eBay and it's worked fine on both the PM7500 450Mhz Sonnet G3 and the PB 300Mhz WallStreet. Both machines are running OS 9.1 with no problems.
HP was working fine until I did a system re-install about a week ago. The HP would power up but wouldn't read any kind of media. Apple System Profiler saw it and recognized it but also couldn't see any media put in the drive. After I finished re-installing the PM7500, the HP worked fine. Still not working with the PowerBook. I haven't finished re-installing it, though. HP's website doesn't list any documentation for installing on an Apple machine. They don't support their drive with Apple. Only Windows. Spent $40 on a SCSI card for the Windows ME machine to troubleshoot! Blasted thing works like a champ on the Windows machine! Internal and external. Tried using the drives jumpers to terminate the drive and set the SCSI ID instead of using the enclosure's hardwired terminator socket and push-pin ID selector. Same result.
