Ed, I, too, use a Pismo. I've been very pleased with my Umax Astra 6400 flatbed scanner. It's big and ugly, but it is fast and gave me great quality results. Max resolution 1200x1200 DPI (though some report 1200x600 DPI, I did not find that to be true). I paid well over $200 for it from Outpost.com in June '01 and considered it worth the cost. It got me through my time-critical project when nothing else could deal well with the huge scans I was generating (dozens of 9"x12" at 1200 DPI, which was taking forever to go over USB + ethernet otherwise available to me). In December '01 it was selling on Outpost.com for about $79, so I bought a second one as a gift. It last sold on Outpost for $49. It does not seem to be available from any of the current mail order vendors at this time. I think Umax gave up on it before firewire had gained a big enough market share. This is the scanner that INCLUDED a firewire PCI card and Photoshop 5 LE! I'm sure you can still find them on various auction sites in new condition and would consider any bid up to $100 to be reasonable for this unit. (And no, I'm not selling mine!) The Astra Model 6450 included a transparency adaptor, but I've never seen it. I'm not sure what Mr. Ethen was doing that required better quality than the Astra 6400 could produce, but if he was scanning slides or transparent films of some sort, it's very possible that the resolution offered by the 6400 was inadequete. I have been delighted with mine.
