Wtih regard to FWire enclosures I have one of the $60 OWC
2.5" disk enclosures and it is the coolest thing. It seems to work
fine. It is a cinch to swap disks in and out.

With regard to my 40G IBM TRavelstar I bought 3 weeks ago.
After a long process in which I transferred my files etc from my
original internal Ti-Book 20G drive (which is also a travelstar) by
way of my OWC firewire enclosure, I got the new travelstar up and
running. It was very fast and quiet for several days. I walked away
from it at 3PM Friday, and when I woke up the computer at 5PM it made
unbeleivably horrible noises--indicating its dead nature.
I called OWC on Monday morning, & they were to send a new
one. It apparently didn't get done because on Wednesday I called
again and only then it got done and I got it Friday. However, give
them credit for sending it before they received my old drive back
again. So now the new one is in the Ti-book and we'll see how it
works. Right now it is working great. It seems very fast and it is
so quiet I have reached to restart the computer and found that only
the moniter was asleep.
As an aside, I purchased a 40G IBM Deskstar for my
secretary's cube a year ago and the exact same thing happened---It
died in the first week. And again, it got immediately replaced and
has run great since. (It is so important to have a quiet drive on a
Cube).
