I've never used one myself, but I would think that if you try to unmount it, like a floppy, the system will tell you whether it is safe to do so or not, regarding if any file are still in use. On the fan spinning's side, I don't know, but I would imagine those drives were made to be pulled while the computer was running, since we're talking about bay expansion. Just my $0.02... -Laurent.
