The Epson should have come with twain drivers, or Photoshop plug-ins: 
she could use Graphic Converter <http://www.lemkesoft.com> which should 
acquire images fine using either.

If the Epson softwre isn't working for some reason (there should have 
been some sort of scanning software that came with it.) try VueScan 
<http://www.hamrick.com> which is a very good, easy-to-use scanner driver.
