Actually, that also sounds like an invisible file (so saying you have that
option turned on. What happens when you try to open the enclosing folder via
Sherlock (by double-clicking on the folder in the bottom pane)? What do you
see?

I had a similar problem once. Unfortunately, it was a hard drive that went
dead a few days later.
