This is fairly perplexing and most hard drive issues are. One thing you might try is to low level format the new hard disk. Over the last year or so I have purchased hard drives over the internet and installed them into firewire boxes. When I plug the firewire box in, I partition (initialize) the new drive in about 10 seconds. In almost every case the drive is flakey. So I usually use third part software and low level format the drive, then partition it and everything is ok. My drives did not dismount themselves they just HUNG every time you tried to do something with them.
