Will it boot from your OS 9 cd?  I noticed that you didn't list that in 
things you'd tried.

Other than that, I can't think of anything that it might be but a 
hardware problem...

Do you run a lot of highly intense apps?  Your processor might not have 
liked the heat from that and the gig of ram.  Could be an error in the 
ide controller.  Your tech is probably correct, the motherboard may be 
history...  Any electrical spikes via power or phone that could've 
gotten to the PB?
