In my case--the one or two times I had this problem--I discovered the corruption when I tried to open the font in the finder to preview it. It was after I discovered the corruption that I realized where my crashes were coming from. :-) There are font utilities, like Suitcase and Font Reserve, which, I believe, will check for corrupt fonts.
