thanks for response raymond,

i wish it were that simple...i do place the cd correctly on spindle. 
combo drive behavior was replicated by apple tech person. hence the 
replacement of drive. doesn't seem to have done the trick though.

i don't know what FreeBSD is, (what is it?) but not being able to read 
cds is quite a concern.

i feel your pain...the iBook is my backup computer and when the monitor 
for my G4 was in the shop i really got to liking it. i'd only used it 
on road trips a couple of times this summer to download photographs 
from the digital camera, so that problems didn't immediately present 
themselves. i'm an hour from the nearest city, where the apple service 
depot lives. don't want to sound like a complainer though. i do love my 
Macs!
