Instead of logging out, I find it handier to use the "Screen Effects". Open System Preferences, then Screen Effects. You can set up "hot corners" to activate the screen effects and you can choose to require to enter your password to return to normal use. Much faster than logging out, and no need to restart classic (which I need all the time, so it has to start everytime I log in), all your apps can continue to run, etc. I just move the cursor to the bottom left corner and go get a cup of coffee or leave the office for the day and my mac is safe from prying eyes.
