They did "officially" say it by updating their specs that are available 
to the public. Had they shipped one with one set of specs and then 
changed it that would be a different matter. But they constantly revise 
their documentation and their hardware. Look at all the revisions of 
different models, Apple never updated people to tell them that Rev 2 
and later Beige G3s came with RagePro instead of Rage II+ graphics 
systems.

Also, you might want to check out http://www.xlr8yourmac.com as today 
they have info on their main page about this exact circumstance, 
according to what Mike posted there the situation is that 2x creates 
more coasters due to how sensitive it is to motion while burning. The 
1x situation is a firmware change not a hardware change, the drive is a 
2x.
