It was connected to their network hub (a 10/100),via an AsantePrint adapter which made it accessible to all their Macs.
Their hub (brand unknown) could obviously auto negotiate the connection with the AsantePrint adapter, but I would not have know that you cannot connect it directly to a Mac/PowerBook with auto negotiating 10/100 ethernet.
