File System Consistency Check (?) Here's how to run it: At the startup chime, hold down (Command-S) through the gray Apple screen until you see the Command line on a black background; then you can let go. Allow the single-user mode (command line) to start-- you'll see a prompt-- and type the following: /sbin/fsck -y (Yes, you do need to put that space in there) It will go through a series of checks, and when finished, will either say: ***FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED*** -or- ***The volume (your HD name here) appears to be okay.*** I usually run fsck as many times as needed to get the "okay" message (which has never been more than twice). After you get the okay message, type: reboot And your mac will do your bidding. _____________________________________________________ In order to *see* this stuff while you start your computer, hold down (Command-V). This is known as verbose logging, and makes it easy to see if there is anything slowing your computer at startup time. You can't actually access the command line when you do this, but it can prove to be quite educational to watch. > Where is macosxhints to be found? > http://www.macosxhints.com/ HTH, Rick Banuelos [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
