It sounds like bad contacts. You should maybe try to inspect the battery and the bay to make sure the contacts aren't dirty or worn. Normally, even if a battery is pretty dead, at least it would know that one is present. But if it can't even see the battery, then it's likely that there's something between the battery and the computer, like dirt.
