Mark, I use a PowerBook G3 Lombard running OS X and a PowerMac 8600 running OS 9.2 and have no problem connecting from the 8600 to the Lombard. I connect through the chooser via AppleTalk over Ethernet.
I ran into a similar problem trying to connect the 8600 to a W2K server. I solved it by changing the length of my password on the W2K machine. If memory serves me correctly OS 8.1 would only send a small number of characters, something like six or eight, for a password. If you tried to send a longer one it would fail even though the password you sent was correct. You may want to try setting up a second user on your icebook with a short password and see if you can connect. Hope this helps.
