Jeff, I recently upgraded my Lombard to run Jag. Did a memory upgrade first, 192 -->512. Then loaded Jag. This is a great combination. The memory upgrade was easy, just make sure you buy the memory from a dealer company that specializes in memory not a general hardware software supplier. The only place I have noticed a little slowness is in window resizing.
I am not sure what processor upgrades are available for the Pismo but I would suggest doing the memory first yourself and then going for the processor later if you think it is to slow. Drive partitioning is painless.
