I've been using my Pismo (G3/400, 640RAM, 40GB Travelstar HD) happily
for over 2 years and I've found the best OS has been 9.2.2. 9.1 was
the pits. Many crashes, stalls and freezes. 9.2.2 has been very stable
and snappy. If you have the original hard drive I recommend upgrading
to a larger, faster one. I considered both the IBM and Fujitsu, but
went with the IBM after reading lots of posts on Apple's Powerbook G3
discussion site.
Max your RAM, get the new HD, install 9.2.2 and you'll be chillin'.
Make sure you choose the option during installation that allows you to
create a new system folder. The old system folder is saved as "Previous
System Folder". Then you can move any drivers or application specific
extensions to the new system folder. I also recommend using Software
Update after installing the new OS. Make sure you have the current
versions of the software you use and you should be in good shape
All that said, I just last week installed OS 10.2.3 on its own
partition and have started using it almost all the time. It's working
really well. I've been running PowerCADD and Excel in Classic and have
had very few problems.
