Let me see if I understand you correctly. YOU rendered a new PowerBook useless when your GIRLFRIEND ignored a warning during a hack, and it's APPLE'S fault that it's hard to fix operator inflicted damage? NOW, you PowerBook won't boot because of an open firmware problem. So when it also refuses to boot from another volume, because of this same open firmware problem, this too is Apple's fault (ref: Thanks Apple!)? It would seem logical that the same problem preventing you from booting from one drive would also prevent it from booting from any other drive. Just out of curiosity, did you try to zapping the PRAM or better yet, simply reset open firmware? Or, since it's new, give Apple a call (hence no need for a second mac "to the rescue")?
