I use this same mouse on a variety of computers including my wife's Pismo, a G3 DT, and an iMac, so perhaps I can comment. The behavior of the mouse in OS 9 on the Pismo is normal since USB support is not found in the ROM it must wait for the extensions to load before it "sees" the mouse. In X you have to install the Logitech software download before the mouse will be fully functional. This download is not included on the CD that comes with the mouse, but is fairly easy to find on the Logitech site if memory serves. It then appears in the System Preferences pane at the very bottom under "additional stuff" (OK, that's not what it's called, but I don't have an OS X computer handy here at work - something like that though). Then you open this preference pane and set the buttons from there. I am confused though when you say that the mouse is ignored in X. Without the Logitech software installed the mouse is still "seen" for me. The cursor will move and the buttons will all operate as a single click. I just have to install the software to enable the scroll wheel and programmable clicks. Does the mouse not even move the cursor for you? By the way, I really love this mouse. I have three now and have never had the least bit of problem with any of them. Even my wife became addicted to them! I got them each on sale at our local Office Depot for a measly $14.99, which is a great price for an optical two button wheel mouse in my book (and no, I have no affiliation with either Office Depot or Logitech).
