I've been using OS 10.2.4 On my Pismo (G3 400 /640 RAM/40GB IBM
HD/Airport)
and I'm quite satisfied with it. Not as snappy as 9.2.2, but the new
GUI and
all the included Apps are worth it.

My CAD software (PowerCADD) is not yet OS X native, so at work
I have been using Classic.

Tip: If you use Classic, become familiar with the Classic System
Preference in OS X.

Tip: In Extensions Manager (OS 9) make an extension set named "Classic
Set" and use that set when booting in Classic.
It took a lot of tweaking of the Extensions Manager to get things
running smoothly.
Many OS 9 extensions should be turned off although it is not always
clear which ones. LowEndMac has a number of pages devoted to helping
one through this.
http://www.lowendmac.com/practical/02/0507.html was helpful.
Make sure to leave on any extensions that are needed by the Apps you
run in Classic.
There is conflicting info about printer drivers. If your printer is
supported in OS X, try turning off the driver in Classic, if you can
print , OK, if not turn the extension back on and try again.

When I started using Safari it was pretty fast, but over a period of 2
weeks it slowed to a crawl. It seems that Safari caches web pages and
checks them against the cache every time you load a new page. This fix
eliminates the browser cache, making Safari very quick.

Be sure to follow the instruction to the letter and read the whole
thread.

Repair Permissions frequently especially after downloading new software
and updates.

MacJanitor seems to help also.

Other tips for optimizing OS X are appreciated.
