First off, I don't own the new 12" but I've examined it thoroughly (and drooled over it) at Apple Soho. I hope to "switch up" to the 12" powerbook one day (for purely cosmetic reasons -- the iBook 700 suits my needs just fine). That said, I think the real answer to the question has to do with how large a notebook your friend wants. If screen size is more important to him than speed, there are lots of older 667Mhz 15" Powerbooks out there for about the same price as the new 800Mhz 12" model. Feature-for-feature, the 12" is pretty much identical to its big brothers, except that it won't take more than 640MB RAM and it doesn't have DVI out (and it doesn't have the L3 cache of the latter models). I think which model is best is completely subjective, and depends upon which combination of features suits his needs best.
