Neoprene is designed to have higher shock attenuation than foam, rubber, and fiber composite materials that are much thicker, so don't be deceived just because it is more flimsy and thinner than other options. I wouldn't put my ibook in a (soft) sleeve made of any other material.
Ooops... forgot... there is one other common material I know of that has higher attenuation than neoprene: urethane, and various neoprene/urethane composites.
