Hi,
I am a new member to this list (wonderful list) with a G3 Lombard. I was
about to post regarding upgrading my hard drive and Ram when I read this
article on Mac Opinion (Is the Lombard a lemon?, Charles W. Moore, Road
Warrior, Mac Opinion, 10.15. "...one might deduce that either a design flaw
or hardware defect is beginning to manifest widely in these machines as they
age.") on the "Lombard" site related to this list. I have been seeing this
memory cache failure notice when I start up the computer which he talks
about in the article for a few days now and was planning to take it in to be
checked along with maybe getting things upgraded. Nothing has happened yet
but I know I'd be wise to make sure everything was backed up (I have an APS
external hard drive that holds most of my files - the G3 mostly just has
software by now with only 4 G HD.

According to the article it is very expensive to have repaired and so a new
computer is in order.

I did just buy the new 17 inch power book and am just getting into really
using it but don't want to cart it around everywhere as I have done my G3
(Large more fragile and all that). I had hoped there was a bit of life left
in the G3. So an I-book may be the answer.

The question I have is has anyone else experienced this memory cache issue
and if so what happened and what did you do about it? Any suggestions for
me?

Many thanks ,

Note: the article written in October 2002 begins this way,
"For the past couple of weeks, Web forums have been thick of anecdotes about
what appears to be an epidemic of cache memory failures in Lombard (G3
Series bronze keyboard) PowerBooks. "
