Microsoft will not create a new version of Internet Explorer for Macs in a move that leaves Apple users in an uncomfortable spot. Jimmy Grewal, the Microsoft Mac IE lead, is fleeing Redmond and heading to Dubai due to the browser's termination. Microsoft is saying it will provide some updates to IE 5 for Macs but does not plan to release an IE 6. It reckons users are in good hands with Apple's own Safari browser, and so the trouble begins.
This is hardly a surprise by any means. I don't know if anyone noticed but MS haven't actually updated IE 5 for OS X for an age, and it's looking very ragged around the fringes for it. I personally have removed it from both my OS X machines and use Safari and Camino (formerly Chimera) instead. If something stubbornly refuses to work I just use IE 6 on my PC.
I am sorry to say (or am I?? I think it'll do Apple good really!) that Apple and Microsoft look like they may finally be going their separate ways, at least software wise. Products rumored to be floating around, and those released, it looks like Apple is bringing competing products to the market in the sane key areas Microsoft is working in on the Mac.
I don't see this as any great loss anyway. I have eased to even remotely like IE since it was rather scrappily ported to OS X. Combine that with the fact that Camino is an excellent Mozilla based browser, and Safari continues to improve with every Beta, and has some really good features. I know there are those out there that will complain about compatibility this and familiarity that but at the end of the day the website is often at fault if it doesn't work multi-platform, not necessarily always your browser.
