I also own a BTI battery for my Pismo, and those 4 lights on the side threw me for a loop. The trick is: when you press the little button on the battery, all 4 lights light up but some are brighter than the others. You have to look at it pretty much straight on to notice the difference. It's annoying, but I trust the menubar battery indicator more anyhow. It has a slightly higher resolution. :)
