here is a battery reset utility for Pismo, I *believe* (I kind of got
lost in the circumlocutive system requirements on Apple's site but the
description did say "G3 Series PowerBooks"). I didn't bother

I've tried that utility when I had problems with an almost dead battery in
my Pismo. The utility would always report that I didn't need it on my
specific PowerBook model and would then quit...

Sorry. I searched on Apple for more details just now and found an article that says "The Battery Reset application is not needed, and will not work on an iBook or PowerBook (FireWire) computer". So that was a red herring.

What I was REALLY searching for is an excellent article written by a Finnish? Norwegian? hardware-hacker who disassembled a bunch of confused notebook batteries and used a homebrewed parallel-port I2C interface to read/write them. He describes the hardware and some of the vagaries of the gas gauge ICs in great detail. I just can't find the link, darnit! Grrrr!
