Here's an update:

I finally swapped the G4/500 Crescendo out of the Wall Street that would not run on battery power, restoring the original processor (G3/266 MHz) with additional RAM (256 MB in the top slot; 64 MB in the bottom). This PowerBook now runs on battery and AC with its original processor restored.

I placed the Crescendo in the PowerBook on which I am writing this message (on battery power for the past 45 or so minutes!), with 512 MB RAM. This Wall Street appears to work fine with the Crescendo; the battery life according to the gauge in the control strip does not appear to be appreciably lessened by the demands of the G4/500 (it was originally a G3/250).

If things continue to work well, I will add a new hard drive and upgrade to X (I am running 9.2.1 now). For the record, I posted my problem far and wide, and although some folks had decent suggestions, most were things that I had tried or else were not directly relevant. I never heard from the fellow who had an identical problem with his Wall Street and a G3/500 Crescendo upgrade. The folks at Sonnet were nice enough, but not particularly helpful.

I wish I knew more about engineering to know why this has happened, but I guess I should just accept that I now have what I regard as a perfectly acceptable outcome and leave it at that.
