Can this be damaging something in the Pismo?
Weeeeelllll.... the short answer is that you're probably working-out a failsafe device, which is to be avoided. Merely the fact of tripping it is inherently undesirable.
The worst-case scenario is that you will push it in and out quickly enough that the cells will get really hot and vent/explode. In the case of a quick temperature spike, the interior of the cell can be hotter than the casing, and the temp cutout sensor is on the casing, not in the cell body.
Bottom line: I would discard this battery.
