I have advertised locally for a cheap PowerBook as I want to make
my own compact iTunes and Internet radio unit for my stereo, i.e.
I will gut the case and build my own box (and probably contribute
to www.applefritter.com).

Anyway, I have been offered a Wallstreet 233MHz 12" STN (not the
revised PDQ version) and I am unsure whether the screen is at all
worthwhile. I have only had TFT PowerBooks for quite some time...

I will add that I am not planning to use the Mac for anything other
than Internet radio and MP3 playing so I won't actually sit and look
at the screen much...

There's your answer...it it'll do what you want, go for it. It is a passive matrix display, hence slower responding, and will wash out in bright lights, but is easier on the battery and visible over a wider angle than active matrix displays.
