I wondered: >How does my GigE TiBook know to sleep? I've perused all Apple's tech docs >and haven't yet discovered the mechanism that induces sleep when the lid >is closed.
Lewin Edwards <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> opined: >Reed switch in most PB's. Power it up, wait for the desktop, and run a >powerful magnet around the edge of the top of the bottom half of the >clamshell until the beast snoozes. and Drew Kershaw <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> also took a similar shot: >A weak magnet over the right edge of the PowerBook? Judging by >everything from the Wallstreet to the Pismo, the sleep actuator is >activated by a magnet in that general vicinity. You close the lid, >lift the magnet up thus completing a circuit, and the PowerBook >should go to sleep... <G> OK guys, which is it, a magnet weak or magnet strong? As it turns out a weak magnet was sufficient, took awhile to find it though since the sweet spot wasn't at the edge. The switch is under the trackpad (probably part of that assembly), on the left side toward the rear. The magnet is taped to the back of the LCD, just a tiny little cylindric-shaped thingy. I had of course noticed it when examining the display's remains but _of_course_ had forgotten about it immediately. Doh! then Steve Moody <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> chimed in: > I just recalled something about the F7 key toggling mirror display. I read that too, in the 12" AlBook's devnote IIRC. Sounded promising but F7 -> Mirrored Displays toggle didn't work under OS 10.2. I still had to blindly grapple for the Display pane main panel to enable mirrored displays, what a PITA. I have a USB mouse but no USB KB, the builtin KB doesn't respond with the display shut (the magnet-on-switch trick.) Thanks muchly for the tips folks! I do still need to know which LCD displays can be used with a GigE bottom, anyone, anyone?
