It sounds like your keyboard is sitting on top of the retractable tabs, not below them. Retract the tabs and let the keyboard drop down.
No, it's slotted in fine, it seems as if it is slightly warped. It seems to bow upwards a little towards the right creating a gap on the right hand side.
