I've just bought an old Wallstreet (the one with the missing keys).

It's old and cheap, not cheap enough to make it obvious that its
background is dodgy, but there is a sign that point to the possibility
of it being a little than kosher, the lack of serial number. The sticker
has been removed, though that in itself means absolutley nothing.

Probably just wore off...most of the serial # stickers on the older powerbooks here have done so.

The stored serial # in some macs is wiped out by a pram reset; I don't know if the WallStreet is one of them.

My Wallstreet's serial number wore off in under 6 months of real "laptop" use. The ink just rubbed right off the sticker.

The Wallstreet does not store its serial number anywhere that is software accessible (at least as far as I've ever been able to determine in three+ years of owning one). If it's not on the sticker and you don't have the original sales bill, good luck finding it.

Old World Macs don't store serial numbers this way. All previous Old World macs had the serial number printed on the back of the case or on the underside (for laptops). New World Macs, as others have already pointed out, store the serial number somewhere in firmware (either on the drive or in the OF).

You should also have a record of it in your original purchase receipt/bill of sale/etc. See if you can get that document from the seller... If not, then who knows. Maybe it's stolen, maybe it's not... That reminds me of a good story about trying to buy a car from the company "Hot Wheels of Tucson." :-/ Ever heard of them, Bruce?

Peace,
Drew
