Is that possible? Assume that my local coffee shop has a wireless network of some sort. Is there a PCMCIA (sp?) card that I can install that allows that?
I don't know too much about public wireless notebook use - is there a web-site that someone could point me to that gives a quick tutorial on that?
Yes, you could get an ORiNOCO Silver or Gold card, which are basically the same than Apple own AirPort card. On OS 9, you only have to install the AirPort software and your card will be recognized as a genuine AirPort card. On OS X, you need to use 3rd party drivers.

I concur. The ORiNOCO Silver/Gold are good cards. I use them exclusively.
FWIW, though, IOXperts make drivers that will work with just about any Wi-Fi card out there. The drivers are pretty cheap (~$20, so if you find a really cheap PC card...). They make drivers for OS 9 and OS X. You'll need two seperate licenses (one per operating system), if you run both OSs.
As Laurent already mentioned, the ORiNOCO cards (WaveLAN chipset) are recognized by AirPort 1.x and 2.x as AirPort PC cards. OS X (and AirPort 3.x) do NOT recognize these cards, so you'll need drivers for OS X.
FWIW, the Apple AirPort card is a rebadged WaveLAN Silver...
(Dan K - I still haven't played around with my AirPort card in my PC Card slot or WaveLAN card in my AirPort slot - I'll let you know if anything funny happens when I do.)
