I'm not sure about the harddrive, but the Pismo WILL boot without a main
battery installed. However, I think you'll probably need to get a PRAM
battery. I know I've had Macs in the past that wouldn't boot because the
PRAM battery was dead.

FWIW, I've never had a dead PRAM battery on my Pismo, so I could be totally
wrong on that point.
