Well, it's got me beat. A dozen attempts and I've
run out of tricks here.
Sounds like you've got an inspired machine.

Install CD from caddy - OK, where will it hang this time?
You never know.

Install CD from G3 Beige via Target Disk Mode (SCSI) - runs for a while, freezes.

Install, clean, one partition or two - no difference - install
process even damages directory so OS 9 partition rendered
unusable.
Of course, creating partitions will delete all your files.

Carbon Copy Cloner - OS X actually ran for a half hour - I was cheering - then it froze in networking - found it had overwritten other files and 150 other files exceeded boundaries.
Why should you copy a system which isn't working?

Banging it on the table - worked just as well as anything.
Strange, Banging on tables should be very effective.

Running Disk First Aid, DiskWarrior, TechTool always finds errors, repairs them but doesn't solve problem.
This is really an item, You've probably banged it on the wrong side.

I even considered getting a firewire box to install as a local drive, but don't see how this would differ from Target Disk Mode. Get another drive? Maybe it's the logic board, I don't know.
Why should you spent more money if you don't know what you're doing?

Consolation - it just loves OS 9.

Thanks for listening, Listers. If anyone has another idea
I'm willing to try.

Now serious,

I think you have a hardware problem. When Techtool finds problems and said "fixed them", they should be fixed. Maybe you've used a too old version of Techtool, or did you try to restore a OSX partition, that would fail.
Maybe this month there will be a new release of Techtool which is capable to restore OSX partitions.
Try to understand your machine, I know how much frustrations you should have, but getting angry on a machine will never help to solve any problem.
I think you are the problem. You probably miss the patience you need.
I've seen so many fools who harmed their lovely little Mac, just because they don't understand what they're doing.
Good luck,

Ron
