I too have a new PowerBook G4 15" (purchased Sept. 26) and successfully used the Up To Date feature at Apple's website for a $19.95 update to Panther. BTW, would anyone have any inkling as to just how much Panther will "break" any existing applications which run well on Jaguar such as PhotoShop 7, Office X Suite, and Roxie's Toast Titanium 5.2? I hope this isn't going to be more trouble than it's worth!
A number of people on campus here have been banging on Panther since WWDC; I've not heard of any major incompatibility issues (though truthfully, most of what I've heard from them was oriented more towards the sysadminish-side of things.
I'm getting the feel that 10.2 to 10.3 is less of a sea-change than 10.1 to 10.2, which was like two different OS'es: like going from System 7 to System 8 is what it felt like.
10.3 (IMO) seems more of an evolution of 10.2, a lot of system tweaks, more goodies, better performance, whereas 10.1 to 10.2 was damn near a complete rewrite of the OS, so many basic things changed.
Jag to Panther is more like System 8.1 to System 8.6 from what I've seen.
My personal history of OSX:
Rhapsody: Evolutionary dead end, odd distant cousin of the final OS.
OS Public Beta: It boots! WooHoo!!! Now shut it down and boot into 9 to get something done.
10.0: It boots! WooHoo! And look I can run things for 15 minutes!! Reboot into OS9 4 times a day, though.
10.1: Wow, I can use this all day long! Of course, I can't print, and things don't work. At least I can pile up all the OS 9 things until the end of the day, and boot into it only once a day.
10.2: This is what OS X was supposed to be! Ahhh...day in day out use. OS 9? I've not booted into OS 9 for 6 months.
10.3: Nice toys. OS 9?? What's that? Isn't that that ancient thing?
