The DSL or cable modem will connect to your Mac's ethernet port.  It's very easy to 
setup yourself if you're given the necessary information.  Most ISPs will include the 
DSL modem for free with a 1 year service contract.  If not I'd look somewhere else.

You can get a wired router/firewall for about $30-50 these days and if you wanted to 
go wireless (which is what I did when I got a cable modem) then the router will run 
you about $50-$100 plus you'd have to get a wireless ethernet PCMCIA card for your 
Lombard.
