As an Apple Service Tech I can assure you that that is not true.  There are
rare occasions where Applecare will cover it in that fashion, but they
usually require the original Proof of Purchase or a letter of transfer of
AppleCare.  There is a fax number in Austin Texas where the person you ought
it from can send a letter authorizing transfer of AppleCare.  If he/she does
not transfer it the AppleCare policy is void on the transfer of the iBook
from them to you.
