I am looking at buying an external FireWire harddisk to use with my FW Mac.

However, there are a number of FireWire *and* USB 2.0 units available,
and I wonder if it is possible to use one of these USB 2.0 drives with a
USB 1.1 Mac (pre FW), obviously at reduced speed.

Will the Mac, e.g. a Lombard see the drive ?
