I did face the same problem and also came to the same conclusions, that the network behavior was pretty inconsistent with the direct connection to server. The mount point for the volumes you access through the browser is totally different than the mount point when you access the server directly. I did file a bug report on this, but I encourage everybody to use the feedback link on the Apple's Mac OS X web site to let Apple knows.
