Only commiseration until someone answers with a solution. My iBook (G3, 900MHz) does the same thing if the screen is untouched and the computer is allowed to go to sleep on its own. In order to awaken it I have to unplug from AC and remove the battery. Then I reinsert the battery and reboot. I've set the Book to never sleep, and I'm careful to put it to sleep when not in active use for any extended period of time, or I use the screen display with iTunes music.
