This can't be entirely true. I use iMovie 2 on my Lombard 333 (No FireWire) and connect to my Canon DV Cam using a FireWire Card.
I managed to capture footage using a Firewire card in my ancient 233 Wallstreet - try various combinations of plugging in camera after launching iMove/before launching iMovie, etc.
