As a recent convert to OSX, thought that I'd made it over the hump. Now that everything is installed on the Pismo (good thing I installed that 60gig travelstar), software is upgraded, less and less classic calls, I've noticed that the help viewer crashes everytime upon launch. Ick. Must have overreached with a haxie or some bit of software, as I assume that the latest rev of Panther doesn't do this.

Simply a corrupted prefs file, I'll bet. I've gotten this with a variety of OSX programs over time, and have found that by deleting the appropriate file in /Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences folder all is restored.

In this case it's com.apple.helpviewer.plist, or possibly either of com.apple.help.plist or com.apple.helpui.plist

Any of these can be deleted without problems, and will be recreated when the program is used again.

Laurent's advice is a very good one. *Every* Mac using OSX should have *at least* two users, one the main user (who you can set to auto-login) and one 'utility' user, who should *also* be an admin, who you only log in as to check things like this...you log in as this user, and if the program still crashes it's the program (or, more rarely, the System), if it runs ok, it's something in your user's prefs files.

If you create a new admin user and log in as that user, I'd wager my leftover turkey (mmm...turkey sandwiches, mmmm) that the help problem goes away.

Extra Haxies don't generally cause this sort of problems.
